With 80 years of history, the Boys' and Girls' Clubs Association of Hong Kong (BGCA) has firmly established itself as one of the leading community service organizations in Hong Kong to serve children, youth and families. With a strong belief that children and young people are the masters of our future, BGCA sets its mission to promote the well-being of children, which is in alignment with its founding ethos - "Nurture the Young Create the Future".
Centering on the holistic development of children, BGCA provides quality and professional services to nurture a balanced development in moral, intellectual, physical, social, and aesthetic for children and young people, and to train them contribute to the well-being of our society.
Over the last eight decades, BGCA has been adopting innovative approaches and developing new services to address and meet the evolving societal needs and concerns in a timely manner. BGCA has also been actively engaged in research and policy advocacy to promote positive environment for developing children and young people. BGCA has also made meaningful contributions to the formulation, implementation and evaluation of social welfare policy in Hong Kong.
In recent years, BGCA has been making efforts in alleviating inter-generational poverty, assisting children with development disorders, fostering mental health for children and teenagers, and encouraging public participation in community. Today, BGCA operates 75 service units and over 50 projects annually to cover different needs in 17 districts in Hong Kong. It runs children and youth integrated centres, school social work services, small group homes, family life education centres, outreach services, services for children with special needs, counselling services, nursery cum kindergartens and camp service.
In 2015-16, BGCA conducted 16,196 events and served more than 190,000 children, young people and their families in Hong Kong through collaborations with over 200 corporate organizations and successfully engaged over 12,100 volunteers.
To deliver these quality and professional services, BGCA maintains a staff force of about 950 persons in different disciplines and professions, including social workers, educators (Principal and Teachers), psychologists (Clinical Psychologists, Educational Psychologists, Drama/Play/Art Therapists), researchers and administrators.
In 1964, the Department started offering an Undergraduate Programme in Social Work, making it the first of its kind in the history of the territory. Responding to the continuing development of social services in Hong Kong and the increasing demand for advanced professional social work training, the Department has launched a number of postgraduate programme since 1977. At present, our Graduate Division offers six postgraduate degree programme including a research programme and five taught master’s programmes. The mission of the Department of Social Work is to provide quality professional and academic training in social work, to develop knowledge related to social welfare and social work, and to contribute to the social development in Hong Kong. For the Undergraduate Programme, the Department prepares students to become professionally competent social workers committed to the welfare of their clients and to social justice. For the postgraduate programmes, we provide advanced training for the development of professional and academic leaders in the social welfare field. Students in different programmes are encouraged to develop independent and critical thinking skills, identify with the humanistic values and ethics of the social work profession, maintain a special concern for the vulnerable groups in society, and keep abreast of current social issues. The Department strives to be a leading center on social work education and research in the Chinese communities.
